The Art of Making Ordinary Days Feel Special
If you’ve ever looked back on childhood memories, you’ll notice something: it’s rarely the “big” trips or holidays that stand out most. It’s the small, everyday moments that stick — the smell of cookies baking, family dinners on the porch, or the way your mom lit a candle before dinner.
That’s why I’ve learned to stop waiting for vacations and big milestones to make life feel special. Instead, I’ve started weaving little rituals into our everyday routine that remind my family — and myself — that the ordinary days matter too.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to bring more joy into the everyday:
1. Flowers on the Counter
It doesn’t have to be a $50 bouquet. Half the time, I’m grabbing flowers from Publix or Costco. But the simple act of putting fresh flowers in a vase changes the whole energy of the kitchen. It’s a small detail that instantly lifts my mood and makes the space feel alive.
2. Music in the Background
It sounds silly, but turning on music while I cook or clean shifts the atmosphere completely. Sometimes it’s 90s country, sometimes it’s worship music, sometimes it’s Motown songs my kids have learned to love too. Music says: this moment is worth celebrating.
3. Meals with Intention
We all have to eat dinner anyway, so why not make it a little special? I’m not talking about five-course meals. I mean things like lighting candles, using real plates instead of paper, or serving dinner on the porch. It takes five extra minutes but creates a memory.
4. Little Surprises for the Kids
Every so often, I’ll throw a note in a lunchbox, pick up a random treat, or suggest ice cream after dinner on a Tuesday. These small surprises remind my kids that joy doesn’t have to wait for weekends or holidays.
5. Celebrate Small Wins
Did your child ace a test? Did you finish a big project at work? Did everyone just survive a busy week? That’s worth celebrating. Sometimes I’ll bake cookies, order pizza, or just announce “movie night” because the ordinary deserves to be honored too.
Why It Matters
When we elevate the ordinary, we send a message: our lives are worth celebrating right now, not just someday. This mindset shift makes our homes warmer, our kids feel more loved, and our own lives feel more meaningful.
The truth? Ordinary days make up most of our lives. Which means ordinary days are our lives. Let’s make them count.
